Name: Kaylee Frye
Door: Door Pass

Canon: Firefly/Serenity
Canon Point: Objects in Space

Age: 21
Appearance: Like this basically.

History: Kaywinnet Lee Frye
Personality:
Positive

Kaylee is the heart and soul of Serenity’s crew. Perpetually cheery and bubbly, it takes something very serious for her to lose her smile. Her cheerfulness is not boundless, however. She can be serious when necessary, and while she tends toward optimism and likes to believe the best of those around her, she can admit when a situation is beyond her power to fix. She has an affinity for engines that makes keeping Serenity in the air usually easy for her, but she will admit her frustration when the crew’s limited budget keeps her from being able to keep the ship in the condition she’d like it to be in.

Kaylee also has a forgiving nature, though, and honestly wants to believe the best in people whenever possible. This is why she gives Simon so many chances even after he blows them all and why she still trusts (and even likes) Jayne when he is so often just terrible to her. It’s also why she would follow Mal anywhere even though he can be cruel and cold to her from time to time.

Negative

Kaylee tends to be a little moody. She can become grumbly or emotional when frustrated or when she's at all embarrassed. When Jayne humiliates her by calling attention to her attraction to Simon in the middle of a ship-wide dinner, she nearly breaks into tears. When Simon is unintentionally rude to her (one of many times), she storms out on him, even going so far as to hold a grudge for a few days. When the girls at a fancy ball she goes to make fun of her dress, she is visibly shaken by their unfriendliness. She does not, however, excel at putting these feelings into words, and she instead sulks by herself rather than dealing with the person she's frustrated with. ETA: She's very comfortable with herself most of the time, but she also has some pretty deep insecurities, mostly dealing with the fact that she's usually in grease-stained coveralls when other girls are clean and pretty. Rejection of any sort deflates her immediately. She grew up with a father and brothers who loved her, and now she lives with a crew that is (mostly) protective of her and her feelings. Interacting with people outside that bubble always shocks her a little.

She's incredibly trusting and a littlenaive. Kaylee trusts the people in her life implicitly. She believes that Mal is the best possible captain, that Zoe can keep them all safe, that there is no better pilot than Wash, that Jayne intimidates better than anyone else she knows, and that Simon is the most talented physician in the ‘verse. She tends to extend this trust to people she doesn't know, and that gets her into a lot of trouble. She's reluctant to judge people negatively, so she's reluctant to believe they might have ulterior or nefarious motives. She's gotten herself taken hostage more than once because of it. ETA: She always expects the best of people, and she takes it as a personal slight when they don't live up to that. When people are mean or rude, she's surprised by it first and then hurt. Given that she works with smugglers and criminals, this moves beyond optimism into willful naivety. When she witnesses River take down Niska's men, she doesn't tell anyone right away, even though it scared her at the time. She didn't want to cause trouble for River, and it ends up putting the entire crew in danger.

Kaylee also tends toward envy. She doesn't get petty or mean about it, but she does often long for what other people have, whether it's money or glamour or romantic love. She's happy with her life, but there's always something she's wishing for that someone else has. ETA: This tendency can lead her to seek affirmation and affection from some other source. Sometimes it's from someone healthy, like a crewmate, and sometimes it's from the nearest handsome face. When she's looking for affirmation, she doesn't usually think too hard about who it comes from or what their motives might be. When Simon slights her, she immediately latches onto Tracey, and her need for him to like her makes her oblivious to him using her and eventually taking her hostage and threatening her life.

She loves her crew like her family, and she would do just about anything for any of them. Try as she might, she cannot hide her emotions or her affection for the people in her life.
